Zero day
We said our goodbyes over breakfast to our good pal Smiles as he was heading back out onto the trail.
It had been a real pleasure hiking with him and we all got on like a house on fire.
It has been great hiking just Sarah and I, but Smiles added some fresh company and he was an interesting and entertaining character.
I think we both learnt a few new tricks from one another and we hope that we will be able to catch him up at some point.
His girlfriend is heading out towards the end of the trail so you never know.
It would be great if we could reunite all of the old faces of the trail and fashion some form of thanks giving meal to celebrate the end of the trail.
Kevin then picked Sarah and I up and took us to the Post Office and Library.
It felt good shedding some unwanted gear sending it ahead to Big Bear Lake.
We then spent all afternoon in probably one of the best libraries on the trail so far. It was well run, quiet and the computers were set up well + we could use Microsoft products etc.
There was also not one sketchy person in sight.
My cold seemed to have really taken cold though and I felt dreadful as I proof read and edited the blog entries i had made on trail.
I also contacted Nemo and although they agreed to replace my faulty pad, they could match it like by like.
Instead they can provide a much warmer Extreme pad that I will just keep for another trip, using Sarah’s instead.
I also contacted REI about a problem with one of our tent poles on our MSR Freelite.
They agreed that providing I can take the tent to store then they will just swap it for a new tent. If it lasts until the end of the trail it means that I will have a brand spanker to take home. Another win
Sarah also battled tirelessly arranging for new trail runners to be sent to Wrightwood.
As well as sorting out some of the other important jobs. Like arranging with Superstar Liz for our spare sleeping pad to be sent out + alsk starting the ball rolling re. where to send all of our gear at the end of the trail.
Kevin picked us up at around 19:15 and took us back to the campground.
Amy in the front desk was once again super kind + helpful. She didn’t even charge us for a 2nd night and let us sit in a common room behind reception until really late.
Apparently the campground had got some bad press in the past due to a disgruntled employee. We saw no signs of this and can only recommend this place to stay. We both thought it was possibly one of the best run campsites on trail + the staff were all amazing + very helpful. Especially Amy and Serena. Serena should also be on stage and was very funny keeping us all amused.
We had seen a fire warning in town due to the gusty wind and dry conditions.
Both Kevin and the security man had said it would be likely that the town may shut off the power to prevent power lines being blown down causing fires.
This had happened before and was normal protocol. Although Kevein told us shutting down the power also turns off the power to the water pumps. Not sensible.
We returned to our sheltered campspot and set the tent up + batonned down the hatches.
I was feeling terrible and concerned that I wouldn’t be fit for the trail tomorrow so an early night was the only option for me.
